CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK WAS A SUCCESS!

What a great week! We had several new families visit the school on Sunday, the students brought in clothes for St. Vincent DePaul, created crazy hats to show off their Faith, Academics and Service, brought misc. items and
made cards for our soldiers, celebrated Vocations Day by dressing up in what they feel God may be calling them to do, and had an all-day read-in to end the week on Friday!
Thank you so much Mrs. Dewan for the awesome apple pies, Mrs. Achatz for the delicious ice cream and cupcakes, Mrs. O’Neill for the fabulous chili and Mrs. Clinger for the superb Skyline Chili!
I would also like to thank everyone that was involved in the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon! Everything was so delicious and it was set up so beautifully! It was nice to be able to eat together as a school and church staff.

Science
We are currently in the middle of our science unit on life cycles. The students have planted pea seeds in soil and in a ziplock baggie so that we can see the root system.
We have been tracking their growth and noting changes that we have seen. We will now be looking at the life cycle of a fruit fly!

Social Studies
We have finished Unit 2 and will be starting Unit 3 on Monday. The focus of Unit 3 is on how and when Michigan becomes a state.
Math
Both classes are finishing their chapters in math on Monday. Both grades will have their test on Tuesday and new chapters will be started on Wednesday. Please continue to help you child practice their multiplication facts
nightly as we will continue to have timed tests on multiplication.

Religion
3rd graders will be learning how we are members of the church and what their role is in the church. The 4th graders will be studying The Commandments and how they help us to love God.

Language Arts
Our 3rd graders finished their book Chalkbox Kid by Clyde Robert Bulla and created their own master pieces out of chalk! They are beautiful! They will continue to read the stories in their Spotlight on Literacy.
Our 4th graders are still enjoying Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis and will be reading Sounder by William H. Armstrong after.
The students did a wonderful job on their book report and writing piece. They were able to share these pieces with the class at the end of last card marking. These reports and writing pieces will be added to their “portfolio” and
will be handed back at the end of the year.

The students will be finishing their Kindergarten Reading Buddy biographies this week and they will be sharing them with their buddies next week. They are doing a wonderful job sharing their love of reading with the kindergarteners.

Valentine’s Day
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in the afternoon on the 14th before art class. The students will be making a Valentine holder in art class prior to that and will be using it to collect their Valentine cards.
Just a reminder ~ we have a total of 8 students in class. Thank you to all those that volunteered to send in treats!
God Bless,
Mrs. Frederick

Happy New Year!
We have been very busy in our 3rd and 4th grade classroom! We have finished our Sound Unit in science and the children did an awesome job constructing their instruments and they thoroughly enjoyed playing “Mary had a little lamb” with their classmates!

We will begin our unit on Plant and Animal Life Cycles this week. We will also be incorporating our science fair project into this unit, which will be presented during Catholic Schools Week. I’m sure they will have just as much fun with this unit as they did with the unit on Sound!

Our focus in Religion is on the Liturgical Year and Ordinary time. Our students will be learning about how the Church year celebrates Jesus and how we remember and celebrate the life and teachings of Jesus.

At this time of year I like to also include literature circles in our reading program. Our 3rd graders will be reading the Chalkbox Kid by Clyde Robert Bulla and our 4th graders will be reading Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. Each group will be completing a culminating activity when the books are finished.

Adventures are the focus in our Writing Workshop. Our students are publishing their Adventure writing pieces as well as writing their adventure book report summaries this week.
The students will also continue to work on paragraph writing skills in Writing Workshop and will be interviewing their Kindergarten Reading Buddy so that they can write their biography. This will be a lot of fun for them and their buddy!
Thank you for all your support and prayers for our school and students!
Have a Blessed New Year!
Mrs. Frederick
Week of December 12th
Well, the students just brought in their instruments that they made for our science unit of Sound. They did a wonderful job designing and constructing them. They even played "Mary Had A Little Lamb"! They really had a lot of fun sharing theirs and checking each other's out.

Welcome to 3rd and 4th grade. My name is Stephanie Frederick and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I feel extremely blessed and very proud to say that this is my fourth year here at Holy Spirit and my eighth year teaching.
Prior to coming here, I taught 2nd grade for four years in a public school before my husband and I were blessed with a family.
Our children have just completed the first grade and pre-kindergarten program and enjoy being students here at Holy Spirit School.
I received my Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University in 2002 with a Language Arts Group Major and a Science Group Minor. In December of 2008, I then received my Master’s Degree in
the Art of Teaching: Literacy Education from Madonna University.
I have an exciting year planned for our students here at Holy Spirit. I will be working hard to help your child grow in their faith, as well as discover the different aspects of our world. School will be a fun and enjoyable place for your child,
and in our classroom I will create a comfortable and loving atmosphere where your child can grow in their faith and enhance their knowledge in the content areas.
If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please feel free to contact me at any time!
Peace and God Bless,
Mrs. Frederick
