Dear Families,

I hope all of you enjoyed the day off yesterday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. The 1st and 2nd grade students learned about the life of MLK, Jr. and why he is considered a hero. The students read a Scholastic News article, listened to several non-fiction books about his life, and read some picture books that were inspired by his dream.

The Roll-a-thon is here already! The students will be skating this Friday afternoon. Mrs. Borek was kind enough to organize this event and she has some fun skating activities planned for the students so that they can show their school spirit. Each classroom has come up with a song/cheer/routine that they will perform on the rink for the rest of the student body. The 1st and 2nd grade students have come up with a routine that they are extremely excited about! It is sure to show their school (and reading!) spirit!!

Catholic Schools Week begins the last week of January. Mrs. Hunter was in charge of organizing all of the events; which is not an easy feat. Thank you Mrs. Hunter for all that you did…we are all looking forward to CSW and showing our pride for Holy Spirit Catholic School! The CSW kickoff Mass will be at 11 am on Sunday, January 29…see you there!

The grade 1/2 students have been hard at work in the classroom. They are learning about geometry in Math and learning about water in Science; which will lead us into our class Science project on Density that we will display at the upcoming Science Fair. The students just finished a letter writing unit in Writer’s Workshop and are now moving on to a “How To” unit. The students will be doing “How To” presentations in front of the class and a few parents will be coming into our classroom in February to do some “How To” presentations as well. Our current chapter book is Because of Winn-Dixie, which won a Newberry Medal and was written by author Kate DiCamillo. The students absolutely love it thus far!
Mrs. Bensinger has asked each student to bring in $1.00 to donate to the poor, starving children in Haiti who desperately need the basic necessities to survive. To those students who have already given her their donations…thank you! To the students who will bring in their dollar this week sometime…thank you in advance!!
The 2nd grade students are nearing their First Reconciliation…please keep them and all of the students in your prayers.
In Christ,
Mrs. Keeder

Dear Parents,
I feel blessed and extremely excited to be back for a 5th year at Holy Spirit as the Grade 1/2 teacher. I truly look forward
to guiding your children as they embark on a spiritual, academic and social journey this 2011-2012 school year.
I am originally from Brighton. I went to a Catholic elementary school for 8 years and attended Fr. Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor. I graduated Cum Laude from Eastern Michigan University
with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. My major at Eastern Michigan was Language Arts and I graduated with a minor in Integrated Elementary Science.
I went on to receive a BX in Language Arts ande I am certified to teach in Grades 6-8. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Special Education with a focus
on Autism Spectrum Disorder through Oakland University.
I have two wonderful daughters who keep me busy as well!
My goal as a teacher is to instill in your child a love of their faith and a love of learning in a nurturing, hands-0n, task oriented environment.
I set high, positive expectations for my students and I believe that every child can be successful in reaching goals.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Please do not hesitate to send a note, an e-mail, or place a phone call.
I am also available in person, either before or after school, so long as I know a day or two in advance.
Thank you for all you do!
In Christ,
Katie Keeder
